Seed Potatoes ($3.50 per pound)

Wed, May 4th, 2011 | 0

I still have a few pounds of these left—if you are like me and haven’t gotten your garden all planted yet, rest assured that planting these now will still produce good yields—but you will have to wait a little longer and make sure you mulch & water them through the summer’s heat. Spudsy says it’s time to get growing!!!

Perhaps you were at the garden center, choosing the most unique and delightful plants for your cherished backyard garden, and you stopped by the potato bin to look at the potatoes. Prepared to be wowed, you were instead disappointed by the common and boring varieties available. If you want to plant potatoes that inspire you and fill you with the excitement that tending a garden should bring, look below! Your kids might even get interested in the purple potatoes!

These 4 potato varieties—Agria, Desiree, Purple Majesty, and Purple Viking—I bought in bulk from http://www.potatogarden.com but I don’t need as many as I bought! I have at least 2-3 lb. of each variety still available. By getting them from me instead of ordering directly from the company, you save $$$—for instance, you can get only one pound if you like, which on the website would cost you nearly $17 ($5 for one pound + starting shipping price is $11.95!)

My price is $3.50 for one pound!

These have nicely developed eyes, but have been exposed to light so they’re not white and leggy. These potatoes are ready to put all their energy into growing roots and stems in the ground so that you can have a bumper crop of delicious spuds!

In the picture below, you can see that, on average, one pound = 11 “sets” (potato pieces with eyes) to plant. At $3.50 a pound, that’s less than 35 cents per potato plant!

Descriptions of these varieties below are from the Potato Garden site.

Note: these are not certified organic potatoes, but Potato Garden is in the process of getting their organic certification and has pledged that all their potatoes are grown in accordance with organic standards even though they’re not “official” yet. I grew potatoes from this place last year and was absolutely thrilled with them—I especially LOVE Purple Viking—it has an amazing taste! :-)

This is ideal for the backyard gardener who wants to grow something different but doesn’t have room for much!

You can call (804) 739-2325 and ask for JoAnna. We are available most days and times EXCEPT Sundays.

Agria : “A Dutch delight from Holland with thinner, smooth yellow skin, shallow eyes and deep yellow flesh, Agria is excellent any way you prepare it. High yields with round to oval tubers. One of our best potatoes for long term storage. Slightly bigger than the equivalent potato German Butterball with the same great taste.“

Desiree: “The most popular “red” potato in Europe. Round to oblong tubers, satin-like pinkish/red skin and gourmet quality creamy-yellow flesh. Prolific yields of excellent all-around cooking potatoes. Very resistant to common diseases. An easy and very reliable gourmet potato to grow.“

Purple Majesty: “This one is a purple inside and out potato, also bred to be a fry type potato and tastes great baked or boiled. Very nice uniformity and yield. Purple Majesty™ potatoes are loaded with 235 milligrams of anthocyanidins per 148 gram serving (approximately 1.5 potatoes), nearly twice the amount found in any other produce item at a fraction of the cost. Anthocyanidins are a subclass of high-potency antioxidants shown to reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease, lower cholesterol, strengthen the immune system and decrease age-related memory loss. Actual season is Early to Mid.“

Purple Viking: “When we give Purple Viking to someone, they always come back for more. Of those who try it, most will fall in love with the taste no mater what kind of dish it is prepared for. Purple Viking excels as mashed potatoes, giving them a unique texture and taste that pleases with every bite. Also great in salads or as a baked potato. Purple Viking has all the characteristics of its parent Viking Red, but it has a true purple skin with pink-red splashes. Perhaps its most remarkable attribute is its snow white flesh with a very smooth texture. Drought resistant and a yielder of large tubers. Its unique taste is loved by many and will get sweeter in long term storage.“
